The “Five Cs” are used to describe five characteristics that will help an adolescent succeed. These Five Cs are: competence, confidence, connection, character, and caring/ compassion. Competence involves having a positive perception of one’s actions, which will allow an adolescent to better prepare themselves for any plans that they have in the future involving working with others and respecting those who have authority. Confidence is having a positive sense of self- worth which will help a student know that they are able to succeed in the future and can complete tasks with great results. Connection encourages positive relationships between others such as peers, family, and even teachers. With the ability to connect with others the student will gain acceptance from others which can also allow them to gain confidence. Character which is a sense of respect and morality allows an adolescent to tell between what is right and wrong in a situation and encourages responsibility over one’s actions. Lastly, caring and compassion gives a sense of empathy towards others and comes with listening skills which will help the adolescent become closer to their peers and other important figures in their life. With these Five Cs an adolescent is sure to succeed in the future and when these traits are encouraged then one is sure to see positive youth development in the future.
In the future, I would like to become a middle school Algebra 1 teacher, and am hoping to encourage these Five Cs in my classroom. To most students math is a difficult subject and is usually linked with teachers that do not focus on each individual. For my classroom I would like to somehow encourage the Five Cs in order to show that I truly care for each individual and I am there to help. By encouraging confidence and really connection with the students I am sure they will be more willing to either ask for help or even willing to give more effort into trying to learn the subject. If the student feels disconnected from a teacher then they will more than likely be unfocused and unwilling to give effort in the class. By using this theory and encouraging the Five Cs I will reassure the student that I am there to support them and help them in their future endeavors by instilling confidence and a caring nature in the classroom. I will give every effort to give individual help if needed and will offer extra credit opportunities to those who give the effort to do well in my class. By rewarding students for their efforts they will realize that I truly care about them and their grades in my classroom, which will give them the motivation and confidence they need to succeed. For those who are not so confident in math I will offer tutoring sessions, which i believe should be very casual in order to get the students to feel comfortable in the classroom and allow them to make a real connection with me as not only their teacher, but as someone who truly wants to help them succeed in the future.
